Letter from Scottish landscape painter Waller H. Paton to the Royal Scottish Academy, confirming his receipt of the Academician medal and diploma which come with his full membership in the R.S.A. (Oct.10th 1865).

Letter addressed to D.O. Hill Esq., Secretary R.S.A. (Royal Scottish Academy). David Octavius Hill, as well as being secretary of  the R.S.A., was Paton's brother-in-law.

Letter embossed at top left ‘Dawson Edin’r'.

Letter is glued to a cardboard card. This card in turn is glued to a loose-leaf paper for mounting in an album.

Letter has smudge LR, some areas with light toning. Has two horizontal folds. Page has creases, toning, glue remnants. Couple of small rust spots left edge.

Waller Hugh Paton

Waller Hugh Paton RSA RSW (27 July 1828 – 8 March 1895), was a Scottish landscape artist working in the second half of the 19th century.

In his teens he worked with his father as a damask designer. From age twenty he trained under the mid-19th century artist, John Houston (1802–1884) RSA. He was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (ARSA) in 1857 and became a full member (RSA) in 1865. In 1878 he became a member of the Royal Society of Watercolourists (RSW).

Paton was one of the few of his generation to work "en plain air", the then fashion being to complete landscapes in the comfort of a studio. He enjoyed depicting the countryside of Perthshire, Aberdeenshire and especially the Isle of Arran. His work is typified by rich purple sunsets,
