Reproduction of poster for 1954 exhibition in Paris for Francois Leger ‘pop art’ paintings. Acrobats were a favourite subject for Léger and his peers Picasso and Chagall. Léger was fascinated by the circus as a child, and liked to watch the troupes pass through his hometown in rural France. In post-war Paris, the circus became a place where culture was easily accessible

Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (1881 – 1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism (known as "tubism") which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art.
